Normal Delivery (Including Painless Delivery)

Normal delivery, also known as vaginal delivery, is the natural process of childbirth in which a baby is born through the mother's vagina. This method is considered the most common and typically least invasive way of giving birth. During a normal delivery, the mother goes through three main stages:

First Stage - Dilation

This stage begins with the onset of labor contractions and continues until the cervix is fully dilated to allow the baby to pass through. Contractions help efface (thin out) and dilate the cervix, and this stage concludes when the cervix is fully dilated, usually at 10 centimeters.

Second Stage - Expulsion

In this stage, the baby is pushed through the birth canal and delivered. The mother actively participates by pushing during contractions. The healthcare provider assists in guiding the baby's head through the birth canal, and once the head and shoulders are delivered, the rest of the body follows.

Third Stage - Placental Expulsion

After the baby is born, the placenta (afterbirth) is expelled from the uterus. This stage usually occurs within a short time after delivery, and the healthcare provider ensures that the placenta is fully expelled.

Painless delivery, on the other hand, refers to the use of various pain relief techniques or medications to minimize or eliminate the sensation of pain during labor and delivery. Epidural anesthesia is a common method used for pain relief during childbirth. It involves injecting anesthetic medication into the epidural space in the spine, which numbs the lower half of the body, providing pain relief while allowing the mother to remain conscious and actively participate in the delivery process.
